So you’re wondering how much sea moss to take daily? That must mean you’ve decided to supplement with sea moss.

Good choice!

The benefits are numerous, and scientists discover more each day! The antioxidant-rich sea moss can work to improve your immune system, help you lose weight, and regrow hair, among other things. It’s also great for joint pain, and can help draw out toxins and other harmful substances from your body. All told, sea moss is incredibly rich in amino acids, vitamin C, vitamin A, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals.

There are dozens of critical vitamins and minerals in sea moss, including 92 of the 102 critical minerals our bodies require to function. These include:

  • Vitamin B2
  • Vitamin B12
  • Calcium
  • Chromium
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Folate
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Sodium
  • Iodine
  • Manganese (Mn)
  • Potassium
  • Selenium

But you already know that, which is why you’ve decided to start using it!

So, how much should you be taking?

Well, the answer really depends on what you’re using it for, and how you’re using it. That’s because sea moss has tons of different applications and forms, from gel to pills to raw sea moss.

The recommended amount of sea moss to take daily is 1-2 tablespoons. This equates to about 4 to 8 grams, in case you were wondering. That said, you can safely supplement with up to 1/4 cup.

The main reason you don’t want to supplement with too much sea moss is simply because it is high in iodine. Iodine is a critical nutrient that our bodies need to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control our metabolism and many other important functions. They also help with bone and brain development during pregnancy and infancy.

That said, too much iodine can naturally cause major thyroid issues. Notably, it leads to developing a goiter, or enlarged thyroid gland. So please stick to recommended doses!

How Much Sea Moss to Apply Topically

As you may already know, sea moss gel is also a great topical supplement for skin and hair. The benefit of supplementing topically is that you don’t need to worry about overdoing it. You aren’t ingesting sea moss pills or sea moss gel, you’re just applying it to your skin, so you don’t need to worry about the iodine. Just rub a copious amount of the gel into your skin or scalp!

Adding In Some Bladderwrack

If you want to add a little bladderwrack to boost your sea moss, you can do that, too. Bladderwack has numerous benefits all on its own. These include improving thyroid health, aiding digestion, and cleansing the body. Simply add a few pinches of bladderwrack powder in with your sea moss gel!

One of the coolest, little-known benefits is that because sea moss is mucilaginous (sticky and thick), you can use it to soothe sinus ailments. It is great for helping your body clear out any excess mucus, and especially aids in reducing congestion. If you’re looking to clear out phlegm buildup in your lungs, raw sea moss is an excellent choice!

Equipment

Blender

Ingredients

1 cup Raw Irish Sea Moss

1-2 cups Filtered or Spring Water

Instructions

  1. Place the dried sea moss in a large bowl, cover it with water, and massage the sea moss. Be sure to remove any visible dirt and debris. Drain and repeat this step once more.
  2. Place the sea moss in a large bowl and cover it with filtered or spring water. (do not use tap water) Make sure all the parts of the sea moss are covered. Allow the sea moss to soak for 12-24 hours. (at room temperature)
  3. Add the sea moss to a high-powered blender along with the water. Start with 1 cup of water and add more if necessary (no more than 2 cups total)
  4. Blend until it is smooth, about 1-3 minutes. Transfer the Sea Moss into an airtight container/mason jar, and refrigerate.
  5. The sea moss gel will thicken in the fridge after 2 hours.

Once you have your prepared sea moss, you can store it in the fridge for up to two weeks and use it in a number of recipes. It’s an excellent plant-based substitute for gelatin or a similar thickening agent, and like we said, it has little to no flavor, so feel free to add it to just about anything.
